Fragility Fracture Network Switzerland (FFN-CH)

A fragility fracture occurs every 7 minutes in Switzerland. A further increase of +38% is expected by 2034.

The number of elderly people over the age of 80 will more than double by 2050.

Every fifth woman over the age of 60 and every second woman over the age of 80 suffers from osteoporosis. However, 50-80% of all people do not receive adequate osteoporosis therapy following a fracture caused by osteoporosis.

One year after a hip fracture, many of those affected need support. Some people are so dependent that institutionalisation in a nursing home is necessary.

Fractures are caused by falls. Every second person falls again within a year after their first fall.

Interprofessional, interdisciplinary co-management in acute hospitals significantly improves the outcome of patients with hip fractures.

Fall prevention programmes and the integration of osteoporosis medicine can effectively prevent secondary fractures.

Fragility fractures have a high economic relevance.

Fragility fractures are bone fractures caused by acute, one-off forces of low energy (such as a fall from a height) with weakened bone substance.

The vision of FFN-CH is that every elderly person who suffers a fragility fracture in Switzerland receives the best possible recovery with regained independence and quality of life without suffering further fragility fractures.

The mission of the FFN-CH is to promote and optimise coordinated, interdisciplinary and interprofessional care in Switzerland for elderly people with fragility fractures, including secondary fracture prophylaxis.
